After graduating from Ware County High School in 1986, James L. Brown, Jr., served the residents of Ware County as a Volunteer Firefighter. In April of 1987, the City of Waycross presented Brown with the opportunity of being able to fulfill his lifelong dream of becoming a second generation firefighter. Thereafter, he served as a firefighter from April 1987 until 1989. In 1989 he was promoted to the rank of Apparatus Engineer and was later promoted to Lieutenant in 1997. He now currently holds the rank of Captain. His responsibilities include supervision of shift and recruit training along with overseeing his engine crew and ladder company.

Battalion Chief Brown holds numerous certifications including: National Professional Qualifications, Firefighter I, II and III, Haz-Mat Awareness, Operations and Technician, Basic Firefighter Instructor and NPQ Fire Instructor I. His leadership skills consist of Supervisory Level I, II and III, NIMS 300 and 400, and Fire Officer I Company Level Operations. Over Captain Brown’s 26 years of dedication to the Waycross Fire Department, he has received a significant amount of awards but his most prominent award is the Firefighter Valor Award.
